Since February 1st this year, the U.S. mobile operator Verizon begins selling home telephone system with touch screen by the name of “Verizon Hub”. This fixed station is connected to the Internet via DSL connection and provides access to various online services companies (yes, we know that all of the weather resources and accounting for traffic jams on roads already sitting in our liver, but this is the most popular of the daily information needed by modern metropolis residents). The station has an attractive (in the style of Windows Vista) design and keeps records of contacts, missed calls and made calls and also contains a calendar. The most interesting of the services, in our view, is to view trailers of new movies, with the possibility of online booking of tickets.

We have never heard of the company IMOVIO, but we would like to move our thoughts. Recently, IMOVIO presented the iKit, a miniature laptop, which will fit on the palm of your hand. Perhaps you saw the other Pocket PCs or mobile devices, which are smaller then iKit in size, but only iKit may be the smallest leptop compliance form factor. Its size is 95 x 65 x 15.5 mm and the weight is 113 grams. The device is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.8 “QVGA screen. Operating system here is Linux, with Marvell PXA270 312MHz processor and 64MB of RAM can be considered an excellent choice, as well as Windows XP here would not be very appropriate.
Among the communication capabilities iKit conains Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g Wifi and the ability to use HSDPA based mobile internet services. It also contains removable micro-SD card for data storage and a video camera for VoIP video meetings. Batteries should be sufficient for 3 hours. Frankly speaking, the device is so small that its hard to believe in some practical applications. But perhaps it will find its buyers. Moreover, the cost of iKit in the United States should be in the range of USD $170.

Since electronic money becoming more popular in the Japan, various reading devices like FeliCa RFID, supporting different types of e-currency, appearing in stores and in vending machines are built. The company introduced the NEC payment terminal FeliCa, in the form of robot’s real size. This robot was presented at a recent exhibition iEXPO in Tokyo. Mass production and application of the robot can begin very soon, because the technology already is fully elaborated. The company NEC expects its robot will be installed at amusement parks. It will sell tickets for entry to visitors who will have phones with the function to pay the robot, the user needs to select the correct icon of electronic money on the touch screen installed on the robot’s chest, and then hold the phone over a reader device embedded in the left arm of robot.
The robot can be programmed to transfer electronic coupons and other data on the user’s phone after the payment occurs. Among other possibilities the robot can use the camera for the purpose of recognizing and identifying visitors to the park. In this case, the robot will be able to recommend certain types of attractions, starting from the age and visitor statistics. It is not clear whether any amusement park is going to hire a new robot. If not, the NEC can simply install robot Fingerprint bots on the border for immigration controls and to collect biometric data of foreigners in Japan.

Sagem Orga has begun a strategic partnership with the BlueSky Positioning for the integration of Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) technology in the SIM cards for mobile phones. The company believes that the provision of GPS technology on SIM cards would provide relatively inexpensive market for local service providers and more customers. The A-GPS SIM exploits a major technology breakthrough made by BlueSky Positioning, including a proprietary In-SIM antenna (patents pending).
This will allow mobile operators to use the commercial applications on all mobile devices and no need to replace the software or hardware devices. In future, these SIM cards will become a daily thing. The primary purpose of A-GPS SIM is to provide accurate positioning information of the phone with A-GPS SIM to let the cellular network operators provide emergency services.

LG Electronics has become one step closer to launch serial production of mobile phones with next-generation communications chips. At the exhibition of mobile technology in North Korea, the company demonstrated a microchip that will allow 8-fold increase in the speed of wireless data networks.
