worlds-1st-2tb-hard-drive-by-western-digital

At the website of one of Australia’s online stores, there is an unusual product. That is a hard drive from Western Digital with a record high storage capacity of 2 TB. Without any high declaration Western Digital intercepted the initiative of the former leader of capacity Seagate, which has released the first of the world’s high capacity HDD (1.5 TB). Western Digital included energy saving technologies, for example, when necessary, they can switch from a speed of 7200 RPM to 5400 RPM. PCWorld Observers believe that this will, of course, help to save a few watts, but did not affect the hard drive’s performance.

It is anticipated that the new HDD of 2 TB capacity contains four plates of the 500 GB.

With regard to the characteristics of the hard drive WD20EADS, it has a buffer of 32 MB and will be characterized by the average search time of 8.9 ms. During this procedure, speed of the spindle changes from 5400 to 7200 revolutions per minute, thus reducing power consumption. The price of the hard drive will be from $210 to $240.

So far, from all major manufacturers of hard drives, only Samsung can not boast any record of capacity. Hitachi was the first company that issued the hard disk of 1 TB, Seagate terabyte overstepped the first barrier and showed the first HDD of 1.5 TB capacity to the world, a new record for high capacity HDD is made by Western Digital. Without a doubt, competing companies will develop their 2 TB hard drive very soon, and then the struggle for efficiency will also begin.

New Video Coding Technique (Part-2)

The data packets are exactly those needed to deliver the disruption-free video. The researchers use extra data packets in the transmission process to save the information if anything unexpectedly happens.

For example if two video packets are to be transmitted, an additional data packet is added equal to the sum of the bytes in the two video data packets. If any one of these transmitted data packets gets lost, the original information would be able to retrieve from the other two data packets. This was told by Wiegand.

This new coding format makes safe the most important part of the video. It makes it possible to restrict the extra data packets in keeping the major information. If it happened something undesirable, only the quality of the video will be affected. The extension of the H.264/AVC format is given the name of SVC. SVC stands for scalable video coding. It can work on all H.264/AVC-compatible devices. So you do not require purchasing new devices to use this video formatting.

Furthermore, it functions on its own, without any support of the overall data volume. It ensures error-free reception even in the case of high-resolution TV. The work on SVC standardization has reached to its completion. It will be used in different applications in near future. Some of these applications would be HDTV, the Internet, video conferences, surveillance technology or mobile radio.

This new extended format is displayed at the IBC conference held in Amsterdam. The conference continued from Sep-12 to Sep-16.

New Video Coding Technique (Part-1)

Video coding techniques always needed to be enhanced. Digital images often results disrupt video display. The new video coding technique is introduced with the name of H.264/AVC.
It will ensure the protection of the most significant part of the information and will transmit data packets safely to in reaching the receiver.

For example if you are watching your favorite detective series. And at its climax, the very severe thunderstorm outside disturbs the digital image on your TV. The picture starts moving with still movements and it becomes difficult to detect the murderer. Why such things happen? The reason is its crystal-clear image quality. It causes its disruption. In the high definition TV or HDTV, it is having an increased volume of data.

In this situation the data packets are at exposed to a chance of damage during transmission. There is a chance of loss of information. This lays a big trouble for developers of video coding techniques. It becomes difficult for developers to recover the data if it is once lost. It requires extra effort to correct the error.

The researchers from three different German institutes are doing research work on improving standardized video coding techniques. These institutes are Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institute and HHI in Berlin. The research work is being done on techniques like the H.264/AVC format. The video technique is used by the YouTube video portal and Apple’s QuickTime player.

If an Internet connection becomes overloaded data packets are randomly discarded during transmission of information. The viewer sees a jerky picture as a result of that. The new extension of the H.264/AVC coding format saves the important parts of the data packets from being lost. This results in clear broadcasting without error. This was stated by Thomas Wiegand. He is the head of department at the HHI and a professor at the Berlin Institute of Technology.

Toshiba’s mobile phone-sized LED projector is not being said to be the smallest projector of time but it could be stated as the lightest one. It weighs only hundred grams, which also includes its battery. It is expected to be available in the market next year. It is having the dimensions of 45mm x 17mm x 100mm. Toshiba hopes that this new device will contribute much in the rising market of electronic products that can take mobile phone media to higher levels.

When we compare the today’s mobile phones with multimedia centers we see that they are more and more functioning as compared to them. But the eye needs extra effort to see them on these mobile phones. Only snaps, short movie clips and games could be easily seen on them.
Pocket-sized mini-projectors, just as the latest one by Toshiba model, will enable people to present demonstrations in a new way. It will allow them to browse their media library in maximum possible size. They would not need being forced to drag around a briefcase having all of the projecting equipment.

The size equation has been superbly determined by using the LED technology. It keeps up battery power. It doesn’t heat up when functioning. This means that it eradicates the need for large, power-consuming fans. The first LED projector ever developed by Toshiba’s was model ff1. It was released in 2006.

This LED mini-projector is exhibited at the start of this month at the IFA exhibition in Berlin. It is scheduled to be launched in a market in 2009. The completed information about its specification or pricing is not available presently. More inside information is coming time to time.

He says that the technology is going through its refining process. He says that the company presented this in its prototype form as it did for other products in the past time. This will help the customers in testing the concepts and determining the options.

Xerox Corporation is one of the biggest document management, technology and services enterprises of the world. It is the big manufacturer of color and black-and-white document processing machinery/arrangements and related products. It also renders document management consulting and outsourcing services.

Xerox’s products are widely used by big companies and individuals as well. Their solutions and services help them manage their data. Last year, Xerox was awarded the National Medal of Technology. It is the highest technology award in America. The technology is developed at Xerox Research Center Webster in New York. It allows users to see how their material will come out before pushing button to start printing.

Xeros is a well-known electronic company. It has been the big manufacturer of some of the remarkable innovations and graphic artists of present age. Its new product, which we are going to talk about, is also big invention. The whole world will almost definitely rate this creation equal to any previous creations by any document system manufacturing company.

The preparation of detailed brochures and flyers with special folds is a costly process. It is also very demanding and time-consuming. This latest technology by the company is great. It uses 3-D software. Through this you can take a view of the whole layout of a piece before getting it into printing process. This is designed to eliminate some of the bottlenecks, which were there for a long time in the printing process increasing its cost. It will also save time and speed up the document preparation and approval procedure. The process being adopted costs six dollars for every one dollar costing on the print job itself. This was told by InfoTrends. With this new 3-D visualization software by Xerox, users can view the final printing form before processing. All of the printing aspects like texture, gloss, folds, binding and all others. This is performed without using any ink or toner to paper.

This 3-D visualization will also prevent mistakes and re-processing high costs. Rob Rolleston told this, who is a research manager at Xerox’s Research Center Webster. By seeing the final result before it is printed can eradicate many possible errors. This includes orientation, cutting, or even how any image will be displayed on the page. This costs much during the first time print.
The objective of this collaborative work which is carried out in all Xerox research centers located in New York and California is to help customers in understanding all the options available to them.

The company knows that the customer needs it while walking into a print shop or submitting print jobs through the Web. 3-D document visualization displays a tour of the required print requirement of each customer. The program shows customer by flipping through a color flip book. It opens and folds his greeting card as it would be in real form. This is a demonstration, showing how it will come out upon completion. Rolleston tells that this software enables users to develop new and interesting documents. There is no need to have vocabulary or the knowledge about the technology of the printing industry at all.

X360 laptop- The lightest Laptop

TAGS: None

It looks computer manufacturing companies are now exhausted and being leaving to introduce unique model names. X360 is the big example of that. It is brought out by Samsung. This may confuse the customers (with less knowledge about laptops ), who are having interest towards purchasing an Xbox 360 or X300 series Lenovo laptop.

Samsung was exhibiting its fresh laptop in IFA in Berlin with strong perception taken from Apple’s Macbook Air. The company advertized its fresh model as “fully featured and lighter than air”. When we see at it we come to know that both of the claims appear to be true with the X360. It has been given the title of the world’s lightest 13.3-inch laptop. It is light weighted having just 2.8lb (1.27kg). It is lower than the previous light weighted model of Macbook Air’s, which weighed 3lbs, (1.36kg). It is fully featured having three USB ports, HDMI & VGA out, PCI ExpressCard/34 slot, a 7-in-1 memory card reader, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Ethernet socket and a 128 gigabyte SSD.

Other features include an incorporate 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR and an Intel Centrino 2 processor. The 13.3-inch display is of the LED form. This ensures a long time battery life from 6 to10 hrs after a single charging. The laptop is manufactured of a magnesium metal casing. It is having a groomed aluminum plate on the liquid crystal display back. The company will release this unit in a variety of colors. Samsung didn’t determine the dimensions of the laptop.

The X360 will be available in the market from September, 2008. The MSRP for this unit would be approximately US$2200. The detail information revealing more of its features is available on the official site of Samsung. You can visit it.

Researchers Discovered Cheap Way To Store Solar Energy (Part 2)

The new catalyst is amorphous without having any distinct structure. It is not stable in form and breaks down after performing its job. But it has the ability to repair itself which enables it to work continuously.

In the experimental method adopted by Nocera, he inserts an indium tin oxide electrode in a container of water. That water was already mixed with cobalt and potassium phosphate. When he applied voltage to that electrode, the chemicals – cobalt, potassium and phosphate—present in the water gather on the electrode, making the catalyst. The oxidation process takes place due to that catalyst and water molecules splits producing oxygen gas and hydrogen ions. Hydrogen ions convert into hydrogen gas by reacting with the platinum catalyst coated electrode. As the hydrogen gas is produced, this cobalt-based catalyst cracks down. But as the solutions contain cobalt and potassium in it, both accumulate on the electrode and thus repair the catalyst.

That development was the part of the research program towards developing artificial photosynthesis inspired by the original photosynthesis process which produces useful fuels, such as hydrogen.

By this method Nocera has resolved the biggest issue in the development process of artificial photosynthesis regarding producing oxygen from water molecules.

Two steps still remain which also should be taken. Firstly there is a need to change expensive platinum material which is being used as a catalyst for making hydrogen from hydrogen ions. It should be replace with a cheap and abundant material similarly Nocera done with the oxygen catalyst.

Cheaper catalyst is not much difficult to find because there are many new materials which could be a good substitute to that expensive one. This was stated by John Turner, who is a principal investigator at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, in Golden, Co.

The second issue which should also be resolved is that there is a need of development of a material which could produce electrons to power the water-splitting catalysts by absorbing sunlight.

There is still much engineering work needed to be done before putting the Nocera’s catalyst in commercial devices. The rate of oxygen production should be improved. Nocera and his co-researchers are confident that engineering work will be completed quickly and it will be soon in commercial use.

Researchers Discovered Cheap Way To Store Solar Energy (Part 1)

Researchers have developed a new advance method in organic chemistry regarding storing energy from the sunlight. The advantage of this advancement is that it would render a cheapest way towards producing electric power. The cost was considered as the top most issue in the energy generation process from sun light. Now it is much resolved by this method.

The chief role in this method is played by a newly developed catalyst. It is developed by Daniel Nocera, who is a professor of chemistry at MIT. This catalyst works to generate oxygen from water by breaking the bonds of water molecules. As a result of this reaction hydrogen ions are freed forming a hydrogen gas. The catalyst is simple and easy to produce in a very low cost. By making use of it big amount of hydrogen gas could be produced by taking sunlight to power the reaction. This hydrogen can be stored and used when the sunlight is not available. It can be later on burned or passes through a fuel cell to produce electric power when needed.

This method is feasible to work whole of the time but limitations are only with the solar cells because their efficiency persists for few hours a day. In these hours they are at the peak of their power generation process. Before this invention the method of using sunlight to split water after storing solar power in the form of hydrogen, was not practically feasible for two main reasons. First of all the proposed method required too much power to carry on that process and secondly the previous catalysts were too expensive to make and prepared by extremely rare source materials raising their preparation costs.

Nocera’s inventions will render key information to other chemical research groups working on developing artificial photosynthesis process. They are experimenting to develop a process by which plants use sunlight to split water and produce energy from it.

Karsten Meyer who is a professor of chemistry at Friedrich Alexander University, in Germany regarded this discovery as crucially innovative one.

He said that by this invention most of the researchers will be stopped working who were engaged in developing such a techniques. He further said that this could also be regarded as the most important and biggest discovery in the field of solar power.

Advanced PET Scanner To Early Diagnose The Disease (Part 2)

The imaging results of the semiconductor-based detectors are much better than the conventional detectors. The reason is that these semiconductor-based detectors are smaller and thinner in size and could be easily adjusted and arranged than others. This advancement in technology renders higher spatial resolution and images with less noise and without irrelevant information. This device also carries depth of interaction (DOI) which is a detecting system. The advantage of this system is that it reduces possible errors at the periphery of the examining body area.

Scientists made a research on the physical functioning capacity of the scanner. This scanner has been used in the treatment of the patients suffering from epilepsy and nasopharyngeal cancer. The clinical significance of this device has also been examined in the bodies of these patients. The research findings show that PET scanner can be used for clinical use; it is feasible for clinical use. The device is result oriented and provides higher spatial resolution and quantitative imaging which is essentially required in nuclear medicine. This device is currently being installed in Hokkaido University Hospital. The staff from the Department of Nuclear Medicine a Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan is present there helping to operate this device.
