The Work Going On The World’s Most Powerful Magnet (Part-2)

TAGS: None

The manufacturing cost of insert and outsert would be $20,000 and $8 million. It is expected that both of them will survive about 100 pulses and 10,000 pulses respectively. The force is very much high and each time it pulses it bends the copper and silver wires. The forceful pulses create tiny cracks in the metal. The cracks created in the copper move into the silver wires and there they stop.

It is similar to the reinforced concrete. That was stated by Boebinger.
The copper material is strong and tough similar to the concrete. The silver is just as the steel bars present in the concrete, which gives flexibility to it.

The inner and outer magnets can collectively create 90 teslas.
Telis is a unit of magnetic flux density; it measures the pulling force of a magnetic field. Even one tesla is having power in it. The Earth’s magnetic field is approximately 50 microteslas. An average MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine is having the magnetic field ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 teslas.

The scientists are hoping to develop more powerful electromagnet within few months. They will succeed in achieving the targeting goal of 100 teslas through it. This will neither be the first 100-tesla electromagnet nor technically be the world’s most powerful magnet. Electromagnets having magnetic force of 1,000 teslas have already been created in history. The significant thing about this new electromagnet will be that it would be the world’s first reusable 100-tesla magnet.

New materials would work for the high definition MRI scans or power lines in future; one example of these materials is iron oxyarsenide. These materials do not waste energy in the form of heat. This will save millions of dollars of the consumers which goes void each year.
At last, this new electromagnet will break as a result of the incredible pressures. This will be intensively forceful breakage.

The building would have to be evacuated before turning the magnet on. This was said by Boebinger. The disassembly of a magnetic will make a resonant sound.

The Work Going On The World’s Most Powerful Magnet (Part-1)

TAGS: None

Scientists are working on to build the most powerful electromagnet of the world. The strongest known materials are being used to make this magnet. This magnet will not blow up a split second after it’s turned on.

The whole magnet will be having coil sets in it. The entire magnet will weight approximately 18,000 pounds. The power will be given by jolts; the energy will be generated through massive 1,200-megajoules motor generators. You can imagine the power of that magnet by this thing that after activation, it would be approximately two million times more powerful as compared to the average magnet fitted in the refrigerator.

The work on this new magnet is going at the High Field Lab. It is a fantastic leap forwards in material exploration. It will increase the capabilities of a scientific community to find out materials which could persist under extreme conditions. This was said by Ian Fisher, who is a scientist at Stanford University.

In many cases the scientists need to go to these sorts of extreme levels in order to understand the nature and behavior of the materials fundamentally, which are used in high-temperature superconductors and other applications. This was told by Fisher.
The electromagnet is having two main parts. The outer part or section will be a cylinder. It will be having a diameter and length of 1.5 meter (4.9 feet). It will be a solid body except for a small hole. The size of the small hole (width wise) will be less than 8 inches and will be at the middle of cylinder.

At the inner side of that hole there are nine coils which are made of copper. These coils are strengthened with silver wire. These two materials – copper and silver - combine to create the material with maximum strength possible today. This was told by Greg Boebinger who is presently the Director of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Florida. The magnet has passed most of its completion stage. That work is being done at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The pressure produced inside the insert is measured to be equal to the pressure if two hundred dynamite sticks are fired together. It could also be explained by that it is equal to the thirty times of the pressure at the bottom of the sea. This is an intense pressure. Very few materials can face these forces for long time. The same thing is with the new magnet.

A Sensor Which Could See Without An Eye

TAGS: None

An eyeless sensor has been invented. Inspiration is taken from the ability of the human skin to ’see’ colors and objects. This would make optical technologies available in the market obsolete. This futuristic device created by Lenoid Yaroslavsky. He is the scientist at Tel Aviv University. This would help in understanding how this primal inherent aptitude might have developed over millions of years. This behavior can be seen also in plants and animals. In fact the biological scientists contest the possibility that there may be a scientific thought for ’skin vision’. Yaroslavsky conceives that skin vision would guide to new advances in therapies. This could help the blind in regaining vision.

Skin sight is ordinary in nature. Plants familiarize themselves with surroundings and circumstances with it. Some reptiles use infrared vision - pit vipers is an example for that. Many reptiles are having skin sensors, which help them in seeing without eyes. Skin vision in human beings is actually a natural atavistic quality. It involves light-sensitive cells in the body skin. These are having connection with neuro-machinery working in the body and the brain. This was told by Yaroslavsky.

He is presently working on imaging simulation theories. He is working on the theories which rely on computer software. His work would lead to future inventions with practical applications.
These devices would have special sensors in them. This would help in coping with terrorist acts at airports and radiation at sea. This would also lead to make new night-vision technological items or near-weightless objects for space activities. These devices would guide spaceships to stars outside our galaxy.

Traditional imaging lenses are currently being used. They just work within a limited range of electromagnetic radiation. They are still very costly. They also have some limitations regarding bulk, weight and field of view. The new lens-less devices could be adapted to any kind of situation. They can be used for different radiations and wavelengths. They could basically function with a ‘bionic’ 360-degree field of view.

Their imaging potentiality would be decided by computer. In other devices it is determined by the laws of light diffraction. This was told by Yaroslavsky. These applications would soon be developed. He hopes to convince biologists to have faith into the mechanisms of optics-less vision.

The display is shown at the rate equal to 30-FPS (thirty frames per second) in either horizontal or vertical orientations. The SensMe music suggestion engine is configured in it. It ends up the hard task of manually tagging individual tracks in your library.

It works on the two technologies from Sony i.e. 12 Tone Analysis technology and LCMIR (Low-Complexity Music Information Retrieval technology. SensMe examines your music collection. It suggests playlists, which is based on each track’s speed, mood and rhythm. It produces a choice of 11 themed ‘channels’.

The S series is also friendly to all available formats. The series support formats from all big download stores as well as WMV with DRM. It also features Supplied Content Transfer software. This helps in ‘drag & drop’ shift of music, videos, podcasts and playlists, (DRM files excepted), from iTunes.

It is being claimed by Sony that the S series could not only be called as the thinnest Walkman ever manufactured but the company is also advertizing it as the best-sounding one also. This is achieved by collection of four Sony-developed Clear Audio technologies. These technologies are complemented by the 13.5mm EX headphones.

It is good news that the NWZ-S730F series do have a fresh 3-way noise cancelling arrangement in it. That functions working with the 13.5mm EX headphones help to keep out background distractions. Nissan’s Brake-Resistance Device

TAGS: None

On Wednesday Nissan displayed latest safety technology discovered by the company engineers. It will be used in vehicles to enhance the safety measures. That will emit a warning sound beep if drivers turn sharply or changes its direction abruptly into the path of danger. It works abruptly and actively makes an effort to move the car towards the safe direction. This technology will be released soon in the market.

It is a brake-resistance device. The company representative said that a car having the device installed on it would try to prevent the driver from changing tracks. For example it will work if it found a car zooming up from behind about which the driver is ignorant.

Motorists will be still given the manually operating power to deter in a danger situation. But a test drive made on Wednesday in which a car was featured with the device caused the brakes to vibrate when danger was detected. This was to give signals about little doubt for which the car was thinking safe situation.

He said that despite of this fully operating device we always wanted that the driver should be given the final control. This was said by an engineer at an annual safety product demonstration ceremony organized at Oppama facility in Yokosuka, an area near Tokyo.

Nissan has set a goal of minimizing accidental deaths and other serious type of injuries involving its vehicles to the half of the level it was 20 years ago. They are determined to achieve this target by the year 2015. In the next plan they will finally eradicate them entirely.

This is not the first time Nissan is introducing such type of technology in its vehicles. The company has already introduced some devices in their “virtual bumper” concept of presentations. One of them has already been introduced in some Nissan cars. This keeps the drivers inside a lane and also helps them in keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front with visual and audible sound warnings.

The Nissan Company is determined to make more advancement in that concept. With this new brake-resistance device the safety technology will help in preventing side and rear collisions. This new device would be hopefully introduced in some luxury models in a near future.

Nissan is the Japan’s third biggest car company. Not only for cars but it is also making systems to protect pedestrians from accidents. They are working on Global positioning system (GPA) for that. In this the signals from mobile phones are used to warn motorists about pedestrian’s presence.

Cancer Tumors Give Off Smell (Part-2)

TAGS: None

The team working on this research passed through a weeklong “wash-out” process. In this process they used fragrance-free shampoos and soaps during washings and baths to avoid any type of smell from themselves during working. They wore T-shirts provided by the researchers to eliminate smells emitted from external means.

The researchers then took odor samples by touching a funnel with an absorbent fiber on the individual’s skin for half an hour. The remaining compounds on the skin were collected by washing it with an alcohol. Two other compounds are also found. We found two chemicals in particular that were significantly different when you compared a cancer patient with a healthy sub solution to collect compounds sitting on the surface. Both of them were collected from the body of healthy volunteers. One of them was abundantly found whereas other one was present in low concentration on the tumors in the cancer patients. The whole research work was disclosed at the American Chemical Society meeting held in Philadelphia.

The research scientists don’t know what biochemical pathway is producing these two compounds and they also don’t know what makes the change in their concentration. Paul Nghiem who is dermatologist of the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, in Seattle, is not working with the research team but he says that there are chances that some physical or chemical reasons may be present behind these distinctive patterns of odors.

This research work is being considered as a breakthrough in the field of curing cancer. Some more research work is need; hopefully scientists would also do more towards that direction.

Cancer Tumors Give Off Smell (Part-1)

TAGS: None

Skin-cancer tumors emit a specific odor that could help in early diagnosis of disease. People who are having tendency of bearing skin cancer must pass themselves through different examination tests and biopsies of suspicious moles so that tissues having disease could be detected and cured at an early stage of the disease. This new discovery gives a new way which is a quicker method to detect the disease without puncturing the skin or entering a body cavity. Researchers have found a characteristic odor coming out of the skin-cancer tumors.

Statistics show that more than a million skin cancer patients are diagnosed each year in America. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are the common cancer types. But these types of cancer diseases are not fatal and not spread very much. Five percent of this whole statistics includes disease of Melanoma; it is a skin-cancer which is the fatal type and reported as the majority of skin-cancer deaths.

For a long time scientists believed that tumors give off a unique smell. Scientists also researched on dog’s smelling sense and found that they have ability to sniff out melanomas and other cancer diseases. It was practically proven by Armand Cognetta, who is a dermatologist in Tallahassee, FL. He trained a dog to smell melanoma; the dog could find melanoma samples hidden in a room and also detect them on the cancer patients.

Michelle Gallagher is a senior scientist at Rohm & Haas. So Gallagher and her advisor, Monell chemist George Preti, took the step to identify the odor markers. Gallagher and Preti joined 11 more people with them with basal cell carcinoma for this research work. All of them are working at the University of Pennsylvania with dermatologists.

Walking robots is a difficult study.Robots can walk on two legs,Recent robots can not move on a surface that is not smooth.

The methods that have been applied to this study are:

Zero Moment Point Technique (ZMP Technique)

This algorithm is used in Asimo which is a honda product. The computer of the robot tried to keep the total gravity acceleration and deceleration forces of walking (called inertial forces), these inertial forces are opposed by the force of the floor(reaction force), the floor force pushed back on the foot of the robot.

Hoping

Many robots that are build during 1980’s(by Marc Raibert) at MIT Leg Laboratory, used daynamic walking. A robot that have one leg and a foot can stay in a up-right position by using the hopping technique (like a person on a stay on a stick). This algorithm is then enhanced to be used by two and four legs. You can see the full set of these robots at the MIT Leg robotics page.

Dynamic Balancing

This technique is more effective than the ZMP movement technique, because it can constantly keep track the motion of the robot, place and move the feet of the robot with stability. This algorithm is used by by the Dexter Robot (by Anybot), which is very stable in movement but it can also jump.

Passive Dynamics

This approach defined the use of the momentum of the limbs or the swinging for effective and greater efficieny. This techique approves that a robot can walk down a gentle slope, It proves that a robot can move on a gentle slope, using no power, but using only the force of ther gravity. By using this mechanism a robot only needs a very small amount of the power (motor power generation) to walk on a smooth surface an a little power to walk or climb on a hill. This technique makes robots more(ten times) efficient than the ZMP walker techiques like used in asimo.

Robots Manipulation
The Robots require moving its body parts to affect the objects, such as they can lift objects, change objects, and destroy objects. Here I will define the hands and arms of a robot. The hands are called effectors and the arms are called manipulators.
Robots use different kinds of strength grippers. Vacuum type, Simple type and Effectors.

Vacuum Grippers
These kinds of grippers can hold very large amount of loads.
Simple Grippers
This kind of gripper is used to hold small objects and have less force than vacuum grippers.
e.g. The grip of two fingers.

Effectors
In some advanced type of robots the human kinds of hands are used. E.g. the shadow hand which is developed by a company in London, this is very advanced kind of hand, currently NASA is using it. It has many tactile sensors for the movement of hand parts.
null
Act of Movement or Locomotion
Robots movement can be rotational or they can walk like humans.

Rotational Movement Robots or Rolling Robots
Robots rotational movement can be implemented by wheels (two or four wheels). The devices that have two wheels can not be considered robots but can be thought of as components of robots. These devices use some kind of balancing algorithms.
Some of the researchers in the “Carnegie Mellon University” developed a mobile robot that can balance itself on a single urethane coated metal sphere; it is about 65 pounds in weight. The named it “Ballot”.
The robot used by NASA, it has tank like structure and have tracks is called Urban Robot also named Urbie.
