An average MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine is having the magnetic field ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 teslas.

The scientists are hoping to develop more powerful electromagnet within few months. They will succeed in achieving the targeting goal of 100 teslas through it. This will neither be the first 100-tesla electromagnet nor technically be the world’s most powerful magnet. Electromagnets having magnetic force of 1,000 teslas have already been created in history. The significant thing about this new electromagnet will be that it would be the world’s first reusable 100-tesla magnet.

New materials would work for the high definition MRI scans or power lines in future; one example of these materials is iron oxyarsenide. These materials do not waste energy in the form of heat. This will save millions of dollars of the consumers which goes void each year.
At last, this new electromagnet will break as a result of the incredible pressures. This will be intensively forceful breakage.

The building would have to be evacuated before turning the magnet on. This was said by Boebinger. The disassembly of a magnetic will make a resonant sound.

Scientists are working on to build the most powerful electromagnet of the world. The strongest known materials are being used to make this magnet. This magnet will not blow up a split second after it’s turned on.

The whole magnet will be having coil sets in it. The entire magnet will weight approximately 18,000 pounds. The power will be given by jolts; the energy will be generated through massive 1,200-megajoules motor generators. You can imagine the power of that magnet by this thing that after activation, it would be approximately two million times more powerful as compared to the average magnet fitted in the refrigerator.

The work on this new magnet is going at the High Field Lab. It is a fantastic leap forwards in material exploration. It will increase the capabilities of a scientific community to find out materials which could persist under extreme conditions. This was said by Ian Fisher, who is a scientist at Stanford University.

In many cases the scientists need to go to these sorts of extreme levels in order to understand the nature and behavior of the materials fundamentally, which are used in high-temperature superconductors and other applications. This was told by Fisher.
The electromagnet is having two main parts. The outer part or section will be a cylinder. It will be having a diameter and length of 1.5 meter (4.9 feet). It will be a solid body except for a small hole. The size of the small hole (width wise) will be less than 8 inches and will be at the middle of cylinder.

At the inner side of that hole there are nine coils which are made of copper. These coils are strengthened with silver wire. These two materials – copper and silver - combine to create the material with maximum strength possible today. This was told by Greg Boebinger who is presently the Director of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Florida. The magnet has passed most of its completion stage. That work is being done at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The pressure produced inside the insert is measured to be equal to the pressure if two hundred dynamite sticks are fired together. It could also be explained by that it is equal to the thirty times of the pressure at the bottom of the sea. This is an intense pressure. Very few materials can face these forces for long time. The same thing is with the new magnet.

The new catalyst is amorphous without having any distinct structure. It is not stable in form and breaks down after performing its job. But it has the ability to repair itself which enables it to work continuously.

In the experimental method adopted by Nocera, he inserts an indium tin oxide electrode in a container of water. That water was already mixed with cobalt and potassium phosphate. When he applied voltage to that electrode, the chemicals – cobalt, potassium and phosphate—present in the water gather on the electrode, making the catalyst. The oxidation process takes place due to that catalyst and water molecules splits producing oxygen gas and hydrogen ions. Hydrogen ions convert into hydrogen gas by reacting with the platinum catalyst coated electrode. As the hydrogen gas is produced, this cobalt-based catalyst cracks down. But as the solutions contain cobalt and potassium in it, both accumulate on the electrode and thus repair the catalyst.

That development was the part of the research program towards developing artificial photosynthesis inspired by the original photosynthesis process which produces useful fuels, such as hydrogen.

By this method Nocera has resolved the biggest issue in the development process of artificial photosynthesis regarding producing oxygen from water molecules.

Two steps still remain which also should be taken. Firstly there is a need to change expensive platinum material which is being used as a catalyst for making hydrogen from hydrogen ions. It should be replace with a cheap and abundant material similarly Nocera done with the oxygen catalyst.

Cheaper catalyst is not much difficult to find because there are many new materials which could be a good substitute to that expensive one. This was stated by John Turner, who is a principal investigator at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, in Golden, Co.

The second issue which should also be resolved is that there is a need of development of a material which could produce electrons to power the water-splitting catalysts by absorbing sunlight.

There is still much engineering work needed to be done before putting the Nocera’s catalyst in commercial devices. The rate of oxygen production should be improved. Nocera and his co-researchers are confident that engineering work will be completed quickly and it will be soon in commercial use.

Researchers Discovered Cheap Way To Store Solar Energy (Part 1)

Researchers have developed a new advance method in organic chemistry regarding storing energy from the sunlight. The advantage of this advancement is that it would render a cheapest way towards producing electric power. The cost was considered as the top most issue in the energy generation process from sun light. Now it is much resolved by this method.

The chief role in this method is played by a newly developed catalyst. It is developed by Daniel Nocera, who is a professor of chemistry at MIT. This catalyst works to generate oxygen from water by breaking the bonds of water molecules. As a result of this reaction hydrogen ions are freed forming a hydrogen gas. The catalyst is simple and easy to produce in a very low cost. By making use of it big amount of hydrogen gas could be produced by taking sunlight to power the reaction. This hydrogen can be stored and used when the sunlight is not available. It can be later on burned or passes through a fuel cell to produce electric power when needed.

This method is feasible to work whole of the time but limitations are only with the solar cells because their efficiency persists for few hours a day. In these hours they are at the peak of their power generation process. Before this invention the method of using sunlight to split water after storing solar power in the form of hydrogen, was not practically feasible for two main reasons. First of all the proposed method required too much power to carry on that process and secondly the previous catalysts were too expensive to make and prepared by extremely rare source materials raising their preparation costs.

Nocera’s inventions will render key information to other chemical research groups working on developing artificial photosynthesis process. They are experimenting to develop a process by which plants use sunlight to split water and produce energy from it.

Karsten Meyer who is a professor of chemistry at Friedrich Alexander University, in Germany regarded this discovery as crucially innovative one.

He said that by this invention most of the researchers will be stopped working who were engaged in developing such a techniques. He further said that this could also be regarded as the most important and biggest discovery in the field of solar power.

Cheaper Process To convert Natural Gas To Gasoline (Part 2)

The cost differs by $10 per barrel. This was stated by Hall. He says that a Fischer-Tropsch plant is having the capacity to produce a barrel of gasoline giving a production cost of $35 but by Synfuels refinery same amount of gasoline could be produced for just $25.

By making the calculations under current fuel prices, it is said by the company that this plant can cover up its own manufacturing cost in four years.

Texas A&M University has got license to own the Synfuels Company. It is presently having the partial ownership of the company. The company has been running a 50 million USD demonstration unit situated in Texas since the year 2005. In the near time it is hopefully said that it will also sign to establish its first commercial refinery which will be located near Kuwait City.

Paul Wolfe says that the company has developed few proprietary parts and chemicals to use as catalyst in the plant. Paul Wolfe is presently president of Synfuels. He further says that the best thing about Synfuels is that it cracks down and rejoins the hydrocarbon molecules in a very efficient manner. He told that we can proudly say that in today’s world nobody can claim that high level of conversion rate to convert natural gas into acetylene as we have claim to achieve.

Ali Mansoori is a professor of chemical engineering and physics currently doing research work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He says that when we take this system from the complication point of view we found that its mechanism is very much simple than that complicated process of Fischer-Tropsch.

There are some other companies also researching to develop GTL more economical other than Synfuels. Gas Reaction Technologies is one of them; it is an establishment working under the University of California. They also claimed to develop a conversion process to form bromine-based compounds from natural gas. These bromine-based compounds are later processed to produce liquid fuels.

Cheaper Process To convert Natural Gas To Gasoline (Part 1)

A Texas company has claimed of developing a new conversion method which is cheaper and cleaner one to create gasoline and other liquid fuels from natural gas. This method would render a way which is more economical to make use of natural-gas reserves which were difficult to develop due to small in size or located at far away places.
Synfuels International which is an American company based in Dallas, is working behind this technology. The company says that the process consists of just few steps. This decrease in the number of steps makes it far more efficient than other conventional techniques which are adopted in the Fischer-Tropsch process. By this process natural gas could be converted into syngas. Syngas is a gas mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. A catalyst used in this process, forces the carbon and hydrogen gas to rejoin resulting in the formation of other new compounds like alcohols and fuels.

Fisher-Tropsch process was first used In the World War II by Nazi Germany. They produced diesel by taking coal and coal-bed methane as a source material.

In a Synfuels gas-to-liquids (GTL) refinery natural gas is processed through number of steps to convert it into gasoline. This method is said to be having better overall efficiency. In the first step structure of natural gas is split by putting it under high temperatures to form acetylene, which is a simplest form of hydrocarbon. The next process includes a separate liquid-phase step. In this a proprietary catalyst is used which causes to convert 98 percent of the acetylene into ethylene. Ethylene is the most complex form of hydrocarbon. This ethylene is used to make several fuel products. The process of its conversion is easy at that stage. These end products include products like high-octane gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. All of these products are absolutely free of sulfur.

This process has enabled us to produce a barrel of gasoline with a low cost than produced through Fischer-Tropsch process. This is said by Kenneth Hall, who is the member of the inventor team of this process. He also remained at a time the head of Texas A&M University’s department of chemical engineering.

In any disaster situation, the affected and relating people must have immediate access to the updates; that would be possible by that software. This software is integrated with programs named by intelligent agents. These programs are helpful to the mobile devices in working swiftly even if they cannot get at wireless information. These agents fully monitor the network connections, and retrieve and save information all the time especially if any interruption occurs in connection; this saves the loss of information. Such programs are not dependant of any specific arrangement; they can be run on any mobile device, any network can be used for it. Moreover the specific network designed for it can be created for this system during the disaster when all other arrangement fails to work.

Weather is the basic factor in wild fires; especially drought which dries out all the vegetation. Dry leaves, trees, underwoods and grassy fields can cause and spread the fire more easily than anything else. The more fuel the more wildly the fire would spread. Long drought dry the vegetation very much, in such case the fire eats up swiftly and it became difficult to contain it. This big fire also evaporates the moisture in the surrounding green trees, which causes them to burn also. They created a new map having the features of collecting, layering and analyzing information from different origins. But especially, the professionals who totally rely on weather conditions because of their job types such as emergency responders and researchers they solved the problem by bringing the updated information on their desktops by using updated and customized weather maps.

Margot Kaye is working as a wildfire manager and also a forestry expert and currently working in Pennsylvania State University in University Park. Everyday she needs to know wind speed and direction, precipitation and humidity in the atmosphere. While talking to Ivanhoe she said;

“We use that data to get a sense of how fire might behave given those weather conditions,”

This new technique has made it possible to get information not to one to two levels but in several ways. Specialized mapping options operating with GIS – geographic Information Systems – is the technique developed by the researchers working at Pennsylvania.

Bernd Haupt, who is a senior researcher at Pennsylvania State University’s Earth and Environment Systems Institute, says about the advantages of this new system;

“We have several maps or data sets and you can overlay them over each other,”

The user can view the live video display of weather condition information directly coming from national weather service on his desktop. Besides this he can also customize this program and run it with Google Earth’ satellite imagery. The user can see weather condition in seventeen different ways such as temperature, rainfall and wind directions. This program also covers the wildfires and displays vertical column or surface level smoke depicting the true picture of the situation.

Maurie Kelly who is a senior person in the research team working at Pennsylvania State University’s Institutes for Environment tells how effective this system would be for different communities working in their own positions. In his words;

“It not only impacts the people who are living near the fire, but it also would impact where the firefighters would be or where they would want to locate themselves in the potential for the fire to spread”

Magnetic Field of Earth Will Be Used For Future Satellites (Part 2)

To practically see the feasibility of this idea, the researchers put the test satellite in a vacuum chamber at SUNY Binghamton; then they shot the charge ions on this satellite in the same way as it happen in the outer space.

No chemical propellant are used in this system, however it doesn’t mean that this is a fuel-less device. It has radioactive material – Americium 241 – which emits charged particles; it is also having electric device with solar cells or battery; which are required essentially to maintain the satellite’s charge.

As the charged ions flowed around the test satellite, its charged particles were whipped off “like wet paint off an aircraft,” said Peck.

The electrical arc produced by the electrical charge – which is created on the two metals used in the satellite – blow off the solder.
Peck said that recently performed tests of solder-less satellites at University of Michigan are found to be successful in results.

Manuel Martinez Sanchez, who is the Director of the Space Propulsion Laboratory of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said; “I don’t think this is going to make satellite designers very excited,”
He further said that this technology would not be successful for propelling a satellite.

It could only be used for changing the satellite orbit; which doesn’t need energy for its movement. The magnetic propulsion system will be tested only when it will be sent to outer space. Peck and his fellow scientists determined to perform the Sputnik-style test in the near future; in which a little beep sound confirms the success of the mission.

Magnetic Field of Earth Will be Used for Future Satellites (Part 1)

The news comes of wind-tunnel test. This test was made on experimental satellite propulsion system; in which satellite uses the earth’s magnetic force to move around the earth instead of chemical propellants. In the experiment the experimental satellite exploded with the flying hot metal pieces.

Despite of this failure of experiment, NASA-funded machine was improved to much better form; representing the new satellite discovery influencing physics and economics of satellite.The plan is to create millions of tiny satellites (equal to corn kernel size or even much smaller in size)

Mason Peck – scientist of Cornell University and co-author of the research work published on arXiv.org – said this explosion doesn’t cast any big physical or financial damage or loss.
After this trial, Peck and his fellow scientists - who are working in University of Michigan and State University of New York, Binghamton – have successfully tested another propulsion system.

This experiment and its results have not been announced yet. It is said that this new system could increase the speed of satellite to four and a half miles per second. Peck and his fellow scientist also said that this newly invented machine will make the satellite mission more affordable and feasible in future. Peck also said that in this way millions of things could be launched in space; if one of them reached the real destination it would be a success of mission.

Propellant-less satellite works on the much like Tele Vision. In the same way as the gun at TV back shoots negatively charged electron and as these electrons move towards the viewer; magnet changes its direction. In this case, a satellite works as electron; it moves around the magnetic field which is earth. As the satellites started circling around the earth it also started taking the influence of a new force, which is Lorentz force.

This force pushes it to the angle perpendicular to its movement direction. In this movement, the satellite would take a little from earth’s energy for its movement.

“The Earth would essentially push the satellite along,” said Peck.

The difference between this newly introduced system and EDT – Electro Dynamic Tether - is that tether has to be aligned and focused in a specific direction; whereas in this new system it would not be necessary.
